Death crash driver awaits sentencing
A DRIVER in a car crash which killed three teenage girls was today sent to a mental hospital to assess his medical state before he is sentenced.
James Houston 27, from Huddersfield, was racing with another car at speeds of up to 60mph when his car crashed in Huddersfield on September 1, 2006.
His three teenage passengers were all killed - Gemma Cost, 15, from Healey, Ursula Alokolaro, 16, from Heckmondwike, and Natalie Donlan, also 16, from Dewsbury.
The driver of the other car, 25-year-old Adam Anguige, of White Lee Road, was jailed for 10 years earlier this year.
He was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.
Houston, who was charged with the same offence, was not fit to stand trial because of the brain injuries he was left with in the crash.
The court decided he did not have the mental capacity to stand trial.
But the jury at Anguige's trial did decide Houston was driving dangerously and in a way which was a cause in the deaths of the girls.
Today an order was made at Bradford Crown Court to send Houston to a unit at St Luke's Hospital in Huddersfield so that a full assessment of Houston could be carried out.
He was sat in the dock at the hearing with his mother and a security guard.
Judge Christopher Prince said gathering the reports would take at least 12 weeks, possibly longer.
Houston would then be brought back to the Bradford court for sentencing.
Judge Prince said he wanted to find the right treatment for Houston but also needed to ensure this type of dangerous and criminal driving did not happen again.
At Anguige's trial the court was told Houston lost control of his car and crashed into a lorry while overtaking Anguige in Wakefield Road, Huddersfield.
In court the race was described as a game of cat and mouse.
